Played

His fingers trailed along the keys, moving up and down through the scales slowly
up and down,
down and up…
Purposeful, rhythmic melody
pounding in sync with her empty heart

He spoke to her
but she didn’t hear his words
Everything scattered to the floor
in the sound of tinkling shards of glass
clattering and chattering to a certain kind of stillness

The melody was the soundtrack
to the background of her life
dull
monotone
predictable
sad

alone

She turned on her heels
the only sound
the crashing of the door
as it slammed
into the jamb
and the scales of the piano
in the empty room
