Scrabbled

She scrabbled across the coarse asphalt

beneath a dome of

steel gray sky and

naked trees with

their branches thrown up

like arms in a hold-up

A cacophony of crows

flew past

looking down and

laughing at her efforts

Cuts and blood

mittened her hands

as she grasped

for individual pieces of flint

hoping to light a spark
