Enflamed

At some point,
the fire burned so bright
and angry inside
it seared all that was good,
soft, and living
inside of her.

Hard charcoal embers
flicked with fire and sparks
ever-oscillating between
red, gray, orange, and white.

Smoke heaved and billowed from within
as soot and ashes
settled like snowflakes
laying the framework for
the ensuing cancer
that would consume her soul.
